Monitoring Monterey Bay from Shore, Sea, & Space

**Please note that as of July 31st 2008, the CIMT website will no longer be updated. The Center for Integrated Marine Technologies (CIMT) has been a non-operational program since 8-1-2007 and as of 7-31-2008 the program will be ending. We hope that you will find this static page a useful reference of the many ocean observing activities that have occurred over the past six years. There are still many useful links including the historical CIMT database and informational fact sheets. Some of CIMT’s research programs and products will continue through the Central and Northern California Ocean Observing System (CeNCOOS) http://www.cencoos.org , as well as through the ongoing research of its principal investigators.

The Center for Integrated Marine Technologies employs a new approach to interdisciplinary coastal research by simultaneously collecting and integrating data collected via remote sensing, moorings and ship-board surveys. CIMT uses these technologies to investigate linkages between: coastal upwelling, nutrient delivery, phytoplankton, and organisms at higher trophic levels (squid, fish, seabirds, sea turtles, seals, and whales).

Working Groups
Ship Survey
CIMT runs ship surveys 9 of 12 months each year collecting physical, biological, and chemical oceanographic data.
Remote Sensing
CIMT provides airborne, satellite, and animal tagging remotely sensed products.
Database
CIMT is developing an integrated database using Live Access Server and Ocean.US standards.
Mooring
In collaboration with MBARI CIMT has deployed a new mooring to help monitor the Monterey Bay.
HF Radar
Shore based radar systems provide information on nearshore currents.
Models & Forecast
CIMT is collaborating with a number of partners to build models to help with ocean observing.
Outreach
Developing strong linkages between the CIMT researchers and product end users.
Bioacoustics
Determining the locations and abundance of whales using acoustics.
Apex Predator Tagging
Apex predators are being used as biological monitoring platforms to help understand the Monterey Bay.
